Harwich Park Run Photos 10.12.2022

After running the park run on and off for a few years, I decided to pop down with my camera on this chilly Saturday morning to volunteer my photography services to Harwich Park Run for the first time. Firstly, a big thank you to all the volunteers that give up their time to make this happen frequently. Secondly, a big well-done to anyone who took part with the starting temperature close to -2°C!

The below gallery hosts the low-res jpeg images from the event; these images are all free-to-use on a personal basis, however they must not be edited, used for commercial purposes, or have their watermark removed. I welcome you all to share these images across any platform, I just ask that you credit the photographer “Josh White” with a link to my website. I would appreciate it if you could follow me on Instagram. If you would like to purchase prints or license digital files, please click here to buy.

I am relatively new to photography, but hopefully the gallery shows some of what I can do. I also promote my services to photograph weddings, events, and more. View my portfolio here. I have added some additional information underneath the gallery to show my gear and settings used, for anyone interested in photography.

These images were all taken using my Canon R6, which I have used for around six months now. This was the first time I had tested the R6 with my new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens, with an adapter. Up until now, I have been using shorter lenses (50mm prime, 85mm prime, and 24-70mm zoom) for weddings and photography in general, so it was nice to have an event which really tests the focusing speed, focal length, and overall performance of the longer telephoto lens. I bought this lens second hand from Wex, but it’s in imaculate condition and saved a fortune vs buying new, plus it’s a little friendlier on the planet. Wex offer a great service, and all used items are inspected for dust, fungus, etc. with a quality rating applied (not a paid promition; just really happy with their service).

The images were all taken at the cameras widest aperture at f/2.8, ISO 800, and shutter speeds around the 1/2000s - 1/3200s mark (depending on whether the sun was behind a cloud or out in the open). The camera was left in servo af mode for the duration, which is almost always the case when you have moving subjects and the focus point is changing constantly. I varied between the face/eye detection and single point focus modes, depending on whether I was photographing an individual or a group. The face detection is lightenening-fast and very reliable, however it is difficult to pin-point exactly who you want to focus on if there is more than one person; so I used the single point af for the group shots.

I am very happy with the results from this setup, particularly how sharp the lens is and how much background separation it gives at longer focal lengths at f2.8. I will be back to photograph some more Park Run events, but you will also see me around photographing various things in Harwich and the surrounding areas. I will always accept feedback from anybody, I just ask that any critisism is constructive!
